Julian California

As American as apple pie...

One of the things I love most about California is its diversity of small quaint towns to bustling big cities. Where else can you find city skylines, beaches, deserts, farming communities, redwoods and snow capped mountains all in one state? Nestled 60 miles northeast of California’s 2nd largest city, San Diego, is one of Californias most charming little towns, Julian. A golden hill covered, winding road leads to this cozy all-American town, seemingly made of apples.

Julian California is perhaps best known for its apple pie and there's no shortage of this tart dessert. Flavors run the gamut; from traditional apple to a variety of berry-apple mixes, to a-la-mode vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. Julian serves up some of the best apple pie this side of the Mississippi.

Apple pie is not all this rustic town has to offer. With its storefronts dating back to the 1870's, Julian has wine tasting, tea rooms, antique stores, beer gardens, distinct boutiques and old-fashioned soda fountains all alongside their famous bakeries and cafes. If it's outdoor activities you're looking for, there are numerous hiking trails, mining tours, Cuyamaca Lake Rancho State Park and camping sites. Julian also has become the hub for the California Wolf Center, where they are "dedicated to the return of wild wolves to their natural habitat and to the people who share the landscape with them".

Founded in the late 1800's after former slave A.E. "Fred" Coleman and several civil war veterans struck gold in the creeks, thus this mining town was born. After the gold rush Julian did not perish like many of the mining towns in the west. Instead it flourished with its commerce, farming, trade and homesteading. Today it thrives with tourism, storefronts, and charming mountain retreats. It's a rare getaway whether it be a day trip for Southern California residents or a stop on a summer family vacation. While in Julian don't forget a slice of apple pie and don't be surprised when you receive a side of good old fashion kindness.
